Drum Cleaning

How to qualify for our free drum collection service

We will collect your waste HDPE plastic drums free of charge if they are clean, free of contamination and in quantities over 500 kilos. This means that you may have to clean your drums using one of the following techniques:

  • Triple rinsing
  • Pressure washing
  • Steam cleaning

The inside of all containers must be dry and free of any residues. Please ensure that you also clean all seals, lids and caps. Do not replace caps or bungs or tops on the rinsed containers but keep them for us in a separate container. Store the drums inverted to ensure they are fully drained. Please remove labels if possible and keep the drums in dry conditions or on hard standing under a tarpaulin.

In those circumstances where drums have contained non-hazardous material and a liner has been used to prevent contamination, the drums may already have an adequate level of cleanliness. However in these circumstances we would first need to inspect and assess a sample.

Please take all necessary health and safety precautions, wear the appropriate PPE and read the label for disposal instructions before washing.

Do not wash containers with residues of phosphides of aluminium, magnesium or zinc or those that could cause reactions or gassing such as hydrogen cyanide. We regret we cannot take these containers.

Drum Inspection

To make free disposal an economic activity for us, we often need to reduce the size of drums for packing and transport. We may have to undertake this activity on your site to maximise our payload. This will be done discreetly on a mobile unit inside our collection vehicle, which depending on the number of drums available, may take up to an hour. In general there should be no disruption to your normal site activities except we will need a parking area for our vehicle near to your waste drum store.

However, please consider the implications this process may have for your site and operations, such as: requirements for contractor induction, health and safety, emergency procedures, security arrangements, movement of site traffic etc. Our representative will be happy to discuss these issues and prepare agreed collection plans.

We will accept clean HDPE drums of any colour and size including IBC’s. However the latter will need cutting into sections prior to transport. If you want us to undertake this task please advise us in advance of collection.

If you have quantities of plastic containers under 500 kilos we may consider collection depending on the proximity to our works. Alternatively you can deliver them directly to us but remember we will only accept clean uncontaminated drums and IBC’s. If you wish to deliver please book in advance to ensure a quick turnaround for your delivery vehicle. As a rule of thumb 500 kilos = approximately 50 x 200 litre plastic drums.

Recycle

The plastic from all containers will be recycled so you can feel confident that you will not only have saved money on disposal costs but also reduced environmental impact at the same time.

Recycling drums:

  • Reduces pressure on landfill
  • Saves oil (that’s what HDPE is made from)
  • Saves CO2  emissions (on average 1.6 tonnes of CO2 is saved for every tonne of plastic returned to us, as less energy is required to make new products from recycled plastic)

To ensure compliance with the Duty of Care we will provide waste transfer notes during collection, however if you wish to use your own. Please provide an adequate description of the waste with a declaration that it is clean and free of contamination. In addition, remember that all waste transfer notes need to include the appropriate waste code as defined in the List of Wastes Regulations. For most waste drums this is: 15 01 02 plastic packaging.

Please ensure that if you are washing and preparing drums for disposal that you do not cause any pollution of the ground, groundwater or waterways and that you observe the applicable legislation. Do not discharge wash waters to surface water storm drains as this may cause a pollution incident that could result in prosecution. And you should not discharge to foul sewer without a consent from your sewerage undertaker (local water authority).

If you are unsure of your legal position we would advise that you contact the Environment Agency or visit Netregs their legal guidance website

If you have a large volume of drums that will need cleaning on a regular basis, automated drum washing equipment is available for purchase. Please contact us for details.
